EVAN RUDELY woke me out of a deep sleep by blowing pot smoke in my face. My first instinct was to punch him in the face. Instead I batted his hand away and scurried to the bathroom to take a shower.

“Hurry up,” Evan shouted. “Yuri is waiting for us. I had to beg him to come in early. Told him it was an emergency.”

“I can rent a suit,” I shouted back through the closed door. He pushed it open and squeezed into the bathroom, shoving me against the sink.

“You are not renting a suit.”

“You’re a snob and a dick, just to be clear,” I said around a mouthful of toothpaste foam.

He cuffed me in the head and barked orders so I’d move quicker.

He finally got me out the door, and I trailed behind him, complaining as we weaved through the parking lot. He stopped in front of a gorgeous dark blue convertible Camaro.

“Get in,” he said.

“Uh, whose car?”

He rolled his eyes. “I’m not a car thief. It’s mine.”

“How many cars do you own?”

“One car, one truck,” he said.

“Can we put the top down?”

“Are you crazy?”

“Please,” I begged.

“It’s only sixty degrees. It’s too cold to put the top down,” Evan huffed.

“Wimp. It’s a heat wave. Back home it’s barely above zero.”

Evan rolled his eyes but refused to put the top down no matter how many names I called him. I pouted for a few minutes until he let me play with the radio.

“You should record some of your music. It’s better than most of this shit.”

“You sound like Sarah,” I said.

He argued with me for a few more minutes until he pointed at a storefront. He jerked the steering wheel and made a sharp turn into a parking lot.

Evan gave me a shove to make sure I got out of the car and followed him. I grumbled about how easy it would have been to rent a stupid suit. “Why spend a shitload of cash for a suit I’ll wear once?”

“You can wear it to your next job interview,” Evan said.

“I like my current job,” I shot back.

“You can’t work at the coffee shop forever.” Evan suddenly snapped his mouth shut and looked sick to his stomach.

“What is wrong with you?” I asked.

He shook his head and took a deep breath before speed-walking toward the store. I jogged to keep up with him.

A short man with a full head of gray hair and glasses sitting at the end of his nose stood waiting by the door.

“Good morning, Yuri,” Evan called out and waved. “Thank you so much for seeing me on such short notice.”

Super polite, ass-kissing Evan was a bit creepy, or maybe I just wasn’t used to seeing him acting so nice. Yuri frowned and grumbled something about the inconvenience of opening early. He handed Evan his keys and gestured at the door.

“Open. Glasses dirty,” Yuri said.

I sneezed, and Yuri took notice of me and immediately stopped complaining. He squinted and pushed his glasses up his nose, stepping directly in front of me.
